Hindi Patrakarita Diwas

Speaking at the symposium organized by Subharti Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University on the occasion of Hindi Journalism Day, renowned professor and journalist Dr. Baldev Raj Gupta said that Hindi journalism has a huge contribution in liberating the country. He said that history was created by Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla from Calcutta 198 years ago, when he started a Hindi weekly newspaper called “Udant Martand” from a city like Calcutta. This was his social dedication because at that time he raised his voice against the atrocities of the Company rule through a Hindi newspaper. At that time the purpose of the newspaper was to move forward with social issues. The newspaper was a mission and not a profession.

While interacting with the journalism students and faculties Dr. Gupta said that journalists should not be afraid of facts. Their writing should be such that a lot of information is contained in a single paragraph of news. Today, in the era of social media, print and electronic media are being challenged, but even then their existence is intact. He said that today there has been a decline in language in Hindi journalism. Whereas it is important to pay attention to the dignity of language in journalism. Remembering the Bharatendu era, he said that the maximum development of Hindi journalism took place in this period, the purpose of which was to awaken the common man against the subjugation of the country. Professor Gupta expressed regret that the rise of Hindi journalism had moved forward with social objectives, but today it is stuck in political complications. He said that to make an identity in the field of journalism, a journalist should be vocal and follow the truth. Dr. Gupta said that a journalist should get the right information from his sources and should never reveal the sources.

Professor Baldev Raj Gupta, current member of the Press Council of India (PCI), said that if a journalist is threatened or pressured from anywhere, then he should complain about it to the Press Council of India. Similarly, if a journalist indulges in blackmailing or pressure politics, a complaint can be lodged against him in the Press Council.

Earlier, Dr. Gupta was felicitated on behalf of the University by the Head of Department, Prof. (Dr.) Subhash Chandra Thaledi. He said that Prof. Gupta is the father of journalism teaching today. He started his teaching career as a journalism professor in the country’s famous Banaras Hindu University,Varanasi in 1973 and retired from the post of Professor and Head of Department in 2003. Even today, he is active in the field of journalism teaching. Not only this, as a member of the Press Council of India, he still advocates the interests of journalists. While addressing the gathering Dr. Thaledi also thanked the management of University for providing the space and support to organise such a wonderful and informative symposia for the students of the department.
