Seminar on “Impact of Dr. Ranganathan’s Philosophy in Transforming the Libraries in Current Scenario on the Occasion of National Librarian Day- 12August 2024

On the occasion of 132nd Birth Anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan– Father of Library & Information Science, Raja Kunwar Singh Department of Library and Information Science, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut conducted a seminar on the topic- “Impact of Dr. Ranganathan’s Philosophy in Transforming the Libraries in Current Scenario” The program was inaugurated by the Head of the Department Dr. Sudhir Tyagi and all the faculty members by garlanding the picture of Dr. Ranganathan. Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Head of the Department of Library & Information Science, while welcoming all present on the occasion, made everyone aware of the achievements of Dr. Ranganathan’s life. In His Insightful address, he said that “Dr. Ranganathan has contributed immensely in the development and growth of libraries in India. He said that the five Laws of library science given by him are useful even in the present times. Throwing light on their significance in libraries, he told that there is no such subject in library science on which Dr. Ranganathan has not written. In view of his contribution in every field of library science, the Government of India honored him with the title of Padma Shri in 1957.”

On this day, Dr. Javed Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Library & Information Science, threw light on the special contribution of Dr. Ranganathan in Library Science. He told that Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, known as the father of library science in India, was a pioneering Indian librarian and educator who made significant contributions to the field of library science and information management. Dr. Ranganathan was a strong advocate of the importance of libraries and their role in promoting education and literacy. He believed that libraries should be accessible to all and that they should be well-organized, efficient and effective in providing information to users. To this end, he developed the five laws of library science, which remain an important part of library science theory and practice to this day.

 Dr. Sapna Sharma discussed the relevance of Dr. Ranganathan’s five Laws in the current context. Dr S. Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science were published in 1931 which is a classic work. She said that these laws have provided a scientific approach to library science. She emphasises that these will provide source of inspiration and guidance in the years to come.  These Laws became the cornerstones of the philosophy of the techniques of Western society’s library experts.

On this occassion, Dr. Arti Kansal said that Dr. Ranganathan’s influence extends to his tenure as a professor and librarian at prominent institutions such as Madras University, Benares Hindu University, and Delhi University. His pivotal role in the Indian Library Association and various international library organizations further solidifies his legacy. She also elaborated on Dr. Ranganathan’s achievements, including his Padmasri honor and designation as National Research Professor.

The program was conducted by Dr. Alpana efficiently. All the Faculty members, library professionals and students present in the auditorium showed great interest in knowing about his achievements. On this occasion, various library professionals also expressed their views and presented songs and poems. Dr. Sapna Sharma presented the vote of thanks at the end of the program. All the faculty members of the department, Dr. Javed Khan, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Alpana, Dr. Aarti Kansal and other staff and students were present in the program. Everyone appreciated the program highly. Overall, the program was successful.
