On June 3, 2024, an important one-day workshop on “Intellectual Property in the Digital Age” was held under the Department of Language, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Subharti University. The keynote speaker was Professor Dr. Sudha Rani Singh, Head of the Hindi Department at Shaheed Mangal Pandey Government Girls College, Meerut.

The program commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting in front of an image of Mother Saraswati, led by Prof. Dr. Sudha Rani Singh, along with dean  Prof. Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Head of Department Dr. Seema Sharma, Dr. Rafat Khanam, and Prof. Rajeshwar Chauhan.

In his introductory welcome speech, Prof. Dr. Sudhir Tyagi emphasized the significance of intellectual property rights in the digital age. He highlighted the importance of understanding these rights for research students and underscored the necessity of awareness regarding one’s own rights as well as respecting the rights of others.

Prof. Dr. Sudha Rani Singh provided an insightful and accessible explanation of intellectual property. She traced its history, starting with George Alf red’s application in 1856 to protect his ideas in India, and discussed the evolution of these rights into law by 1970, coming into force in 1972. She used examples such as James Watt’s steam engine and Yahoo India.com to illustrate concepts like copyrights and patents, clarifying the differences between movable and immovable property.

Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of the Language Department, explained the concept of plagiarism under copyright law and provided strategies to avoid it. She encouraged writers, research scholars, and literary figures to secure copyrights for their work, either online or offline.

Ms Swati Sharma from the Department of Languages elucidated the basic rights under copyright law, its applications, and the process of patenting designs.

Dr. Shobha Ratudi inaugurated the workshop with a poetic welcome for the chief guest, department heads, and attendees. Dr. Rafat Khanam, Associate Professor of English, expressed gratitude and emphasized the ongoing organization of such workshops for the department’s growth.

The workshop was attended by the Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Department Head Dr. Seema Sharma, and Prof. Rajeshwar Chauhan, Dr. Rafat Khanam, Dr. Shobha Raturi, Dr. Manisha Luthra, Dr. Yashpal, Dr. Ashish Kumar, Dr. Ranveer Singh, Dr. Farah Hashmi, Dr. Anuj Bawra, MsSwati Sharma, along with Dr. Sapna, Dr. Alpana, and Dr. Javed from the Library Science Department. Students from the Language and Library Science Departments were also present.

Dr. Manisha Luthra efficiently conducted the workshop, which was well-organized and effectively managed by the Language Department.
