Guest Lecture On “Gender Sensitization: A Broader Perspective”

A Guest Lecture on “Gender Sensitization: A Broader Perspective” was organized by the Department of Liberal Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Swami Vivekanad Subharti University on 3rd March 2023. Dr. Rafat Khanam, Associate Professor, Department of Language worked as the coordinator of the program.   The program started with the welcome address.

Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, FASS, Dr. Manoj Kumar Tripathi, Head, Department of Liberal Arts and Humanities and Dr. Rafat Khanam, Associate Professor, Department of Language welcomed the guest speaker by presenting the Token of Honour.

 Dr. Shruti Nagar, Ph. D. in Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Panjab was the guest speaker of the program. She sensitized students with the difference between SEX and GENDER. She highlighted the topics like patriarchy, Matriarchy and gender biased violence. She said that Gender is a socially constructed phenomenon and it is the society that stimulates the gender discriminated tendencies in us since our childhood. Girls are taught to do household works or care for others, whereas boys are ensured that they will be fearless, intelligent and strong.

It is one’s upbringing that determines how one grows, what one becomes. She enlightened students with the issue of masculinity and femininity and put forth that such stereotyped attitude is harmful for the society. She made every one realized that men and women have multiple work roles that are accomplished together. These include: production, reproduction, essential household and community services, and community management and political activities.

She sensitized students about the other genders like LGBTQIA, Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual. Finally, appealed students that we should sensitize people to have a broader perspective about gender equality and it is a necessary foundation for a peaceful and sustainable world. It would not only make progress on Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals, but also make gains on the alleviation of poverty and promote sustainable economic growth. After the conclusion of the lecture the students cleared their doubts and welcomed the guest speaker’s suggestions and ways to sensitize people around the world about gender equality. Total 27 students and 11 faculty members were present in the program.

The following academicians Dr. Harish, Dr. Durvesh, Dr. Neha, Dr. Ankit , Dr. Amit, Dr. manas Kandi, Dr. Shobha Ratudi, and Ms. Vibha ghavri were present throughout the program. Ujjawal Sharma, student of B A IV semester and Tripti Sharma, B A II semester student hold the stage throughout the program and everybody admire them for performing the anchoring magnificently. Shrey Attari, B. A. II Semester student did the photography wonderfully. Dr. Ankit thanked Dr. Rafat khanam for arranging and coordinating the program marvelously. He further thanked Dr. Shruti Nagar for enlightening students with a very sensitive issue like ‘Gender Sensitization’. Dr. Rafat Khanam paid the formal vote of thanks and the program ended with the desired goal, knowledge and pleasant vibes.
