Doctors have a role when it comes to addressing non-medical factors like poverty, economic justice, climate change, and road safety. These socioeconomic and environmental issues threaten the health and welfare of the public. Ignoring them is like treating the symptoms of disease rather than its cause. So here is, Subharti Medical College carrying forward the vision of Uttar Pradesh Government on Road Safety. We organized a one-week program (22-07-2021 to 29-07-2021) dedicated entirely to the concerns of Road Traffic Accidents and their prevention. The responsibility of awaking and priming our young budding doctors was taken by Dr. Rahul Bansal, Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, Subharti Medical College, Meerut. In his inaugural speech, he addressed the causes of Road Traffic Accidents and highlighted the most grievous issue of “Drink and Drive”. On 26-07-2021 a quiz regarding traffic rules was organized in which MBBS students of the 2018 batch participated with enthusiasm. The moderator of the program was Dr. Pawan Parashar, Professor, Department of Community Medicine.
The celebration of “National Road Safety Month” was concluded with the speech of Dr. A. K. Srivastava, Principal & Dean of Subharti Medical College, Meerut. He appreciated the initiatives and concerns of the Uttar Pradesh Government and said that with only 1% of the world’s vehicles India accounts for 11% of global deaths in road accidents, the highest in the world. He further added that our country reported over 1,51,000 fatalities due to road accidents. He not only told the rules regarding road safety but also highlighted the commitment of Subharti Medical College towards social responsibility and being the torch-bearer in the field. We had Mr. Basant Singh, the traffic Inspector as the guest speaker in the concluding function. He highlighted the rules and regulations of Road Traffic. The function was concluded with group photographs and high tea. It was attended by undergraduate students of MBBS Batches 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020.
