“Any crime in which internet is used through computer or mobile is called cybercrime” – Dr. Ashutosh Garg. By sending an e-mail, a phone call or through a link, the criminal can collect your personal information such as your Aadhar card number or your bank account number. If the information sought by the criminal involved in these crimes committed by the virtual world is given by you, then you can suffer a great loss. Dr. Ashutosh Garg said that if you get a call from an unknown number and they ask you for your bank account information, your password, or OTP by pretending to be a bank officer, then you should never share this information. In other words, it is the use of computers by virtual persons to defraud people. Earlier thugs used to cheat in daily life but now these criminals have started duping people through the internet and computer. Such thugs or criminals make internet users their victims through hacking, data theft, theft of your personal information and photos and asking you to use unwanted software, etc.

He told that taking away or stealing personal information from someone’s computer and using it wrongly is called cyber-crime. Fake bank calls are the perfect example of this. Apart from this, a common fake email received by many is when an email is received that reads that you have won a lottery and they require a few bank details to deposit a big sum of lottery award money into your account. One should never click on such links and submit or share your data/personal or banking information with such fraudulent emails.

One should even be careful while shopping on well-known websites.

Dr. Ashutosh Garg added that if you are a victim of cybercrime, then you can register a complaint online on the Cyber Crime Portal of the Government of India. Victims can get their reports submitted online or offline. One has to be patient after you get the report done as it may take some time to find where the culprit of the virtual world is.

During this survey, Ms. Anjali Yadav told the people that one can also call the help number 15560 of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Complaints related to cybercrimes on this portal are dealt with by law enforcement agencies/police on the basis of information available in complaints. Correct and accurate details are required to be given while registering the complaint in order for speedy action to be against the culprit.

During this awareness program, some people shared their experiences of fraud and financial loss through Paytm and other such online wallet applications. People were told by the members of the awareness team that one can contact the free legal aid centre of Subharti Law College from 8 AM to 4 PM from Monday to Saturday for any kind of legal problem.

Apart from this, you can also get your problems resolved by calling the phone number 0121 6678000. You can also lodge a complaint through WhatsApp No. 9639010415 or E-mails at vidhikmitra.law@subharti.org.

Students Anil Kishor, Himanshu Panwar, Paramjit Hooda, Abhayjeet, Kshitij Rana, Manik Pahuja, and Uwais Participated in the cyber awareness campaign and asked people to fill a questionnaire to help in the awareness programme.
