Career Opportunities in Home Science: From Academic Learning to Entrepreneurship and Employment

The Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Department of Home Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, organized a Career Counselling Session on “Career Opportunities in Home Science: From Academic Learning to Entrepreneurship and Employment.” The session aimed to guide Students and Alumni about diverse career pathways available in Home Science and to help them understand how academic knowledge and practical skills can be transformed into employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The session focused on the wide range of career opportunities available to Home Science graduates and postgraduates in areas such as Food and Nutrition, Human Development, Dietetics, Early Childhood Education, Counselling, Food Processing, Entrepreneurship, Research, Community Development, and related industries. Students were encouraged to identify their interests, strengths, and skills and explore career options according to their individual potential.

The session was addressed by Dr. Jyoti Gaur, Dr. Nishma Singh, and Dr. Shalu Nehra, who provided valuable guidance and practical insights into career planning. The speakers highlighted the importance of combining academic knowledge with practical skills, communication skills, digital competencies, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and entrepreneurial skills to enhance employability.

Dr. Gaur emphasized the importance of making informed career choices and encouraged students to explore both conventional and emerging career opportunities in Home Science. She highlighted the scope of higher education, research, teaching, community services, and professional careers in various sectors.

Dr. Singh discussed the opportunities for entrepreneurship and self-employment in Home Science. She explained how students can utilize their academic and practical knowledge to develop small-scale enterprises and innovative products, particularly in areas such as food processing, nutrition services, early childhood care, skill-based training, and other allied fields. Students were encouraged to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and identify opportunities based on local needs and available resources.

Dr. Nehra highlighted the importance of career readiness and employability skills. She guided students on developing professional competencies, improving communication and interpersonal skills, preparing for employment opportunities, and continuously upgrading their knowledge according to changing industry requirements.

The interactive session provided an opportunity for students and alumni to understand the connection between academic learning, skill development, employment, and entrepreneurship. The alumni also shared their experiences and views regarding their career journeys, providing valuable insights and motivation to the students. Participants actively engaged in the discussion and received guidance on identifying suitable career pathways and preparing themselves for future professional opportunities.

The session concluded with the message that Home Science offers diverse and rewarding career opportunities, and students can build successful professional careers by combining academic knowledge, practical skills, innovation, and an entrepreneurial approach.
