DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION CELEBRATES NATIONAL SPORTS DAY 2026 IN ASSOCIATION WITH UNIVERSITY SPORTS COMMITTEE

Meerut: The Department of Physical Education, Faculty of Education, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, in association with the University Sports Committee, organized National Sports Day 2026– “Khelega Bharat Jeetega Bharat” today at the General Mohan Singh Sports Ground, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, marking the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand Ji with a day of ceremonial, cultural and sporting activities. The celebration brought together students and faculty members from across the University in a display of discipline, fitness and sportsmanship, reaffirming the institution’s continued commitment to holistic student development.
The event was graced by the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. V. K. Mittal, who attended as the Chief Guest of the celebration. His presence lent considerable dignity and inspiration to the occasion, drawing enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members across departments of the University. Throughout the programme, the Vice Chancellor actively engaged with students and faculty, lending his personal involvement to several of the day’s key activities rather than remaining a mere spectator.
The programme began with a formal welcome extended by Dr. Manju Adhikari, Head, Department of Physical Education, who welcomed the Vice Chancellor, faculty members and student participants, setting the tone for the day’s celebrations and outlining the significance of National Sports Day as a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji’s enduring legacy in Indian sport.
This was followed by a Torch Rally, in which the ceremonial torch was carried across the ground before being formally passed by the Vice Chancellor to Physical Education student, symbolizing the transfer of the spirit of sportsmanship, discipline and national pride from the University’s leadership to its youth. The gesture was met with visible enthusiasm from the students gathered on the ground, marking a symbolic high point early in the day’s proceedings.
The March Past that followed saw enthusiastic participation from students of various departments of the University, who marched in disciplined formation before the dais. The contingents displayed coordinated drill movements and precise formations, reflecting the rigorous physical training instilled through the Department’s academic and co-curricular programmes. The Vice Chancellor received the ceremonial salute from the marching contingents, in a display that reflected the coordination and discipline cultivated across the University’s student body.
The celebrations continued with a Mass Yoga Demonstration, in which the Vice Chancellor and several faculty members joined the students on the ground, actively participating in the coordinated yoga session rather than merely observing from the sidelines. This active participation from the University’s leadership was widely appreciated by those present, and reinforced the day’s broader message of health, fitness and well-being for all, in keeping with the spirit of the celebration’s theme.
A key highlight of the celebration was a Faculty versus Students friendly Hockey Match, organized in tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji’s legacy as one of the greatest hockey players in history. The match was keenly contested from the very first whistle, with both sides displaying competitive spirit and sportsmanship throughout, evoking great enthusiasm among the spectators gathered around the ground. In a closely fought contest, the Faculty team eventually emerged victorious in the final, to loud cheers from students and colleagues alike.
The National Sports Day 2026 celebration at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University brought together the University’s leadership, faculty and students in a shared spirit of sportsmanship and national pride, reflecting the Department of Physical Education’s continued commitment to promoting an active and healthy campus culture. The day’s proceedings, spanning ceremonial, cultural and sporting components, stood as a fitting tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji and to the broader vision of building a fitter, more sport-conscious University community.
The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem, with all present standing together in a moment that fittingly brought the day’s celebrations to a close, marking the successful conclusion of Sports Week 2026 and National Sports Day 2026 as a whole.
