The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, organized an engaging and interactive guest lecture on the topic “The Art of Effective Communication Skills”. The session was conducted by Ms. Divya Singh, TOEFL Speaking Scorer & an experienced Soft Skills Trainer. Her lecture aimed at equipping Mass Communication students with the essential communication skills required for academic, personal, and professional success.
At the beginning of the session, Ms. Singh introduced the students to the significance of communication in today’s competitive world and explained how mastering the art of communication can transform an individual’s confidence and career prospects. She elaborated on the 5 Ps of Communication. The students were also introduced to the art of saying ‘No’, a vital skill that helps in maintaining personal boundaries, professional discipline, and clarity in communication.
Another key part of the session was Vocabulary Building, where Ms. Singh emphasized that a strong vocabulary is the foundation of good communication. She conducted engaging classroom activities that not only helped students learn new words but also guided them on how to use vocabulary effectively in real-life conversations. To make the session lively and memorable, she included activities such as Sentence Race, Pronunciation Drills, and Story Building Exercises. Through these fun-based learning tasks, students practiced framing correct sentences, improving pronunciation, and presenting a simple story in a powerful and effective manner.
Ms. Singh also pointed out a crucial challenge faced by many Indian students. The lack of fluency and confidence in speaking skills. She emphasized that this communication gap often results in missed opportunities, especially in securing scholarships and international exposure. She advised students to adopt daily reading habits, practice public speaking, and participate in discussions to gradually overcome their hesitation. Her words of encouragement motivated the students to believe that with consistent practice, they could achieve mastery in communication and present themselves confidently on global platforms.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Preeti Singh, Assistant Professor, who ensured the smooth organization of the lecture, while the anchoring was done by Varsha, a 3rd-year BAJMC student. The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty members, who actively engaged in the activities and appreciated the interactive format of the lecture.
