Subharti University Celebrates October 21 as Independence Day, Honoring the Legacy of the Azad Hind Government

Swami Vivekanand Subharti University has been celebrating October 21, 2024 as the Independence Day of United India with utmost passion and vigor to honor the development of the Azad Hind Government by Subhash Chandra Bose, a key moment in the fight for India’s Independence that symbolizes true freedom and self-determination. This date marks the formation of a provisional government-in-exile in 1943, representing a bold step towards a liberated India. With the tradition of beginning the day with a powerful ‘Prabhat Pheri’, followed by Flag Hoisting in the presence of our Founder Dr. Atul Krishna, C.E.O Dr. Shalya Raj and our Honorable Chief Guests Major General VD Wadhwa, Shri PL Mehta and Professor MLB Bhatt. The entire atmosphere was then empowered by the national anthem of the Azad Hind Fauj, “Azad Hind Gaan”.

A powerful and vibrant parade was then presented by our Army Band, ex-army personnel, and NCC and NSS students which served as a heartfelt tribute to our nation’s heroes. The day witnessed a series of inspiring events unfolding; an enthusiastic parade was then followed by an insightful speech delivered by our Vice Chancellor GK Thapiyal and Dr. Atul Krishna about the significance of the day in the history of Indian struggle for independence. Dr. Atul Krishna eloquently illuminated the audience on the true history of the struggle for independence, challenging the commonly held narrative around August 15, 1947, being the sole date of India’s independence. He chose to present the facts and truths in their entirety, educating the audience on the importance of recognizing Indian independence for what it truly represents, including the significant contributions of freedom fighters like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who demanded independence rather than begging for it, as in the words of Dr. Atul Krishna, “Azadi bheekh me nahi milti, azadi chini jaati hai.”  Our honorable chief guests, Shri P.L. Mehta and Professor M.L.B. Bhatt, who are survivors of the partition, shared their grief, leaving the audience stunned by the revelation of the real history. Following Dr. Atul Krishna’s inspiring address, the atmosphere lightened as students performed in a series of cultural programs, including skits, dramas, and musical performances and Spandan Cultural Fest 2024 prize distribution held in the Maangalya Auditorium, ending the day on an uplifting note.

Subharti University identifies and respects the significance of the day and has been celebrating October 21st as the Independence Day since the inception of the University. The University’s stance and approach on Independence day might come across as contentious but is rather based on facts and therefore is significant as it uncovers the values for which the University stands tall. August 15 is the day that marks the celebration of Independence of the divided India, a day in the history of India that marked the partition time, heavy displacement of the public, followed by a period of havoc, lost lives and misery. The university prays for the peace of those families on August 15 every year, and remembers the history for its true nature.

As Subharti University continues to celebrate October 21 every year as the Independence Day, it stands tall on its four pillars of excellence; Shikha (Education), Seva (Service), Sanskar (Ethics) and Rashtriyata (Patriotism). With each passing year, the university strengthens its resolve to inculcate these values in its students, nurturing the leaders of tomorrow who will carry forward the legacy our freedom fighters and inspiring figures of the history of India left behind. Through education, dedication, and empowerment, Subharti University remains committed to shaping a future that honors the sacrifices of the past, encouraging all to reflect on the true meaning of independence.
