“Legal Awareness and Sensitization Program”
Sardar Patel Subharti Law College, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut organized a free legal aid and awareness program at Village Govindpur, Tehsil Sadar, District Meerut was organized Under the direction of Director of Subharti Law College, Rajesh Chandra (Former Justice Allahabad High Court Prayagraj Uttar Pradesh) and under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Vaibhav Goyal Bhartiya, Dean, Subharti Law Institute and with the help of District Legal Services Authority, Meerut, Gender Justice, Women Empowerment, on various legal and social issues like dowry prohibition, cruelty and child marriage (prohibition)
A team of students led by Dr. Sarika Tyagi reached Village Govindpur Panchayat for free legal aid and awareness campaign. Addressing the women, children and men presented there, Dr. Sarika Tyagi explained the concept of equal justice system for women and men in Article 14 of the Indian Constitution, explaining on the subject she told about their various fundamental and legal rights. Looking at the equal role of both, it is necessary that they should be given equal opportunities in all other fields including education, because if one side is weak then social progress will not be possible. It is noteworthy that India’s female literacy rate is much lower than the world average of 79.7 percent. She said that gender inequality refers to discriminating against women on the basis of gender. They are suffering from exploitation, humiliation and discrimination both at home and in the society. For any country to develop completely, it is necessary for the rest of the women to be educated. It is like a medicine which helps in curing the patient and then helps in making him healthy again. Just as the balance of a bicycle depends on both the wheels, in the same way the development of the society rests on the shoulders of both men and women. Article 21 of the Indian Constitution: Women have the right to live with dignity and decency equal to men (Right of Dignity) or right against harassment in office, security or right to receive equal remuneration (salary), right against domestic violence Right to privacy and Free Legal Aid and the right not to be arrested at night etc. is available. If women are educated then they can solve all the problems of their home. Explaining about the free legal aid provided by the District Legal Services Authority located in the Meerut court complex, Mr. Vinod Sharma, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Meerut, said that in the year 2014, the Uttar Pradesh government has given such persons whose annual Income is up to one lakh, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women (without any economic limit), children, handicapped, victims of various types of crimes, etc. can get free legal aid as well as compensation.
Panel Advocate Baljeet Singh while explaining about the Dowry (Prohibition) Act, 1961 said that Section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code is such a section, in which most F. I.R. is registered. Dowry demand can be punished for 3 years. If action is taken under Section 304-B of the Indian Penal Code on death due to dowry, the guilty person can be punished for up to 7 years. The same, taking and giving dowry is an offense under Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, for which fine and imprisonment of up to 5 years can be imposed.
Om Thakur, a B.LL.B. First year student, said that women empowerment refers to making women independent rather than having the freedom to make their own decisions. Women have been oppressed since the beginning in the patriarchal society in India, so the main objective of empowerment is to make them equal to men. To help them in stand together as equals. The student Anshu Raj B.LL.B. First year student said that gender justice strives to provide dignified life and freedom to women as a basic human right.
