Dr. B. R. Ambedkar has been an outstanding contributor in drafting the Constitution of India. The Constitution has never been a frozen document, rather has remained a living reality. Notwithstanding the sterling role played by the Drafting Committee and Babasaheb Ambedkar, the Constitution as it exists today is a product of interactions among three elements: the text, the court and the people. Being the Chairman of Drafting Committee, Ambedkar after completing his work, stated: “I feel the Constitution is workable; it is flexible and it is strong enough to hold the country together both in peace time and in war time”. He was the first man who understood the necessity for a democratic system in India and analyzed the social, economic and political system of India in relation to other countries. His contribution to the evolution of free India lies in his striving for ensuring justice – social, economic and political – for one and all. He dedicated his whole life for socio-economic upliftment. While addressing the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Ambedkar remarked that our political democracy cannot last unless it lies at the base of social democracy. The concept of social justice emerged out of the process of evolution of social norms, order, law and morality. It laid emphasis upon just action and created space for intervention in the society by enforcing rules and regulations based on the principles of social equality. Dr. Ambedkar also made great contribution towards economic reforms and his thoughts about Indian economy applies to agriculture, land reforms, Indian currency problems, labour problem, economic upliftment of women, economics of caste system, human capital, water resource policy, strategy of human development, taxation policy, democratic state socialism, free enterprise economy, population control- family planning, nationalization of industries and many more. Furthermore, the political philosophy of Ambedkar assisted in renegotiating the crisis of western political theory in particular and leading the fights of the people in general. What ails a sensible citizen today is the lack of interest for the effective understanding of the Constitution. The need of the hour is to interpret and implement the provisions of the Constitution in its true spirit. Hence, it will enable the Indian society to overcome all social, economic and political issues that the Nation is facing.
