This recognition is a testament to the multifaceted efforts undertaken by the Swami Vivekanand Research Chair, SVSU, Meerut which is committed to disseminating the teachings and ideals of Swami Vivekananda in society. The Research Chair regularly organizes seminars, workshops, book exhibitions, guest lectures, lecture series, panel discussions, and various academic and cultural programs. Through these initiatives, the teachings of Swami Vivekananda are effectively communicated to students, researchers, and different sections of society. The objective of these activities extends beyond academic enrichment; they also focus on character building, strengthening moral values, and fostering a sense of social responsibility among individuals.
On this occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Monika Mehrotra, Professor and Convener of the Swami Vivekanand Research Chair, SVSU, Meerut was also specially honored for her tireless efforts and significant contribution in elevating the Research Chair to new heights. Under her dynamic leadership, the Research Chair has successfully organized numerous national and international level programs, thereby enhancing the reputation and academic stature of the university.
After receiving the award, in her inspiring address, Prof. (Dr.) Monika Mehrotra elaborated on the life, works, and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. She described him as a great spiritual leader, social reformer, and one of the foremost architects of modern India. She emphasized that Swami Vivekananda played a pivotal role in presenting Indian culture and the principles of Vedanta on the global stage, spreading the message of humanity, service, and self-confidence across the world.
She highlighted that in 1893, during the World’s Parliament of Religions held in Chicago; Swami Vivekananda represented India and, through his powerful and eloquent speech, introduced the greatness of Indian culture to the entire world. In 1897, he established the Ramakrishna Mission, which continues to play a leading role in the fields of education, healthcare, social service, and humanitarian relief even today.
Referring to his major contributions, she stated that Swami Vivekananda propagated the principles of Vedanta and Yoga among the masses through Karma Yoga, Janna Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Raja Yoga. His teachings remain as relevant in contemporary times as they were during his lifetime. He regarded education not merely as a means of acquiring information, but as a powerful tool for personality development and self-realization.
She also emphasized his strong advocacy for women empowerment and education, noting that he continuously worked towards establishing equality and justice in society. His principle of “Service to mankind is service to God” elevated human service to the level of divine worship. He raised his voice against social evils and superstitions prevalent in Indian society and inspired the youth to develop self-confidence, courage, and a deep sense of patriotism.
Prof. Mehrotra further stated that the thoughts and teachings of Swami Vivekananda are highly inspirational for today’s youth. His timeless messages continue to guide individuals towards success and self-development. She encouraged young people to follow his famous call: “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is achieved,” inspiring them to remain persistent and confident in their pursuits.
Sharing some of his key ideas, she remarked that his philosophy motivates individuals to move forward in life with inner strength, concentration, positivity, and fearlessness. Swami Vivekananda firmly believed that “Strength is life, weakness is death,” and therefore every individual must recognize their inner potential and utilize it constructively.
On this occasion, she also provided a detailed overview of the activities and achievements of the Swami Vivekanand Research Chair, SVSU. She stated that the primary objective of the institution is to inculcate values of morality, service, and nation-building among the youth. Through its various initiatives, the institution not only imparts academic knowledge but also inspires students to become responsible and conscientious citizens.
Concluding her address on a cultural note, Prof. (Dr.) Monika Mehrotra presented a soulful Bengali song, which deeply moved the audience and added a unique cultural dimension to the event, leaving everyone emotionally enriched.
The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. (Dr.) Pramod Kumar Sharma, the Chief Executive Officer, Prof. (Dr.) Shalya Raj, the Registrar, Gp Capt M.
