The Hands-on Workshop on “From Moot Proposition to Courtroom: Research and Memorial Writing Skills” was organized by the Alumni Committee in collaboration with the Moot Court Association, Sardar Patel Subharti Institute of Law, with the objective of equipping students with the practical research and drafting skills required for effective moot court advocacy.
The session commenced with a formal introduction of the resource person, Adv. Bhawini Kaushalya, an alumna of the 2018 B.A.LL.B. batch and Gold Medalist of the Institute, presently a practising advocate at the Delhi High Court. Her achievements as Winner, Best Speaker at a National Moot Court Competition, four-time Winner of the Best Team award, and Best Speaker at the Institute’s Intra-Moot Court Competition were shared with the students to set the context for the session.
Adv. Bhawini Kaushalya began by decoding the landmark case of Bhagwandas Goverdhandas Kedia v. M/s Girdharilal Parshottamdas & Co., using it to demonstrate how facts are to be extracted from a proposition and how jurisdiction is to be identified and argued in a moot matter.
Adopting a practical, “teach by doing” method, she walked the students through the process of framing legal arguments step by step, working through each stage herself before inviting the students to attempt it, and clearing their doubts as they arose. She also shared her own memorial, which had been recognized at a National Moot Court Competition, allowing students to study a real, award-winning example of memorial drafting.
The workshop further covered courtroom etiquette and procedure, including how students should appear before the judges and formally seek permission before addressing the bench. The session was marked by extensive interaction, with the resource person engaging closely with the students and responding to their queries throughout.The organizing team placed on record its deep appreciation for our Hon’ble Director, Justice Rajesh Chandra (Former Justice, Allahabad High Court), whose continued mentorship remains instrumental in fostering practice-oriented legal education among students. Special thanks were also conveyed to Dean, Prof. (Dr.) Reena Bishnoi, for her unwavering support and encouragement in facilitating such enriching moot court initiatives.
At the conclusion of the session, the Moot Court Association shared a moot proposition with the students to enable them to practically apply the research, fact-finding and argument-framing skills learnt during the workshop, and asked them to submit their memorials for evaluation. This was followed by a formal vote of thanks given by Mr. Anurag Choudhary, expressing heartfelt gratitude to Adv. Bhawini Kaushalya for her valuable time and guidance, and to all participants for their active involvement, which made the session informative, engaging and memorable.
