Rahul Sankrityayan Subharti School of Linguistics and Foreign Languages, popular as Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, organized an online guest lecture on “The Making of Literary Theory: An Enquiry into its Formulations” on 30th June, 2026. Dr. Rafat Khanam, in- charge of English and Foreign Languages and coordinator of the program welcomed the distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Gurpyari Bhatnagar, Associate Professor of English, Department of Social Sciences & Humanities, Sharda University, Greater Noida.  During the lecture, Dr. Bhatnagar provided an insightful overview of the evolution of literary theory, tracing its journey from classical Greek philosophy to contemporary critical approaches. She emphasized the significance of theoretical frameworks in literary studies, encouraged participants to develop a balanced and critical perspective while interpreting literary texts, and highlighted the interdisciplinary relevance of literary theory.

Objectives

  • To introduce the concept and evolution of literary theory
  • To explore major theoretical formulations and approaches
  • To promote critical thinking and literary analysis among participants

  1. Enhanced understanding of the development of literary theory

The programme was conducted successfully  with the blessings of Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, and Dr. Seema Sharma, Head, Department of Languages. The event was coordinated by Dr. Rafat Khanam, In-charge, Department of English & Foreign Languages, and Dr. Akanksha Singh.The proceedings of the programme were gracefully anchored by Ms. Vidhi Goswami, a postgraduate student.

The guest lecture concluded with an engaging interactive session during which participants actively interacted with the resource person and shared their observations and queries. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, including Vidhi Goswami, Arshi Iqbal, Yashika, Bhumi, Prachi and faculty members Dr.Manisha Luthra, Ms- Sanya , Ms Soni Chauhan, Ms.Bhawna Joshi, Dr.Vijay, Dr.Preeti, Dr.Anita, Dr.Swati Sharma  and other attendees, reflecting their keen interest in the subject. The programme concluded with the inspiring address delivered  by Dr. Gurpyari Bhatnagar , who expressed her sincere gratitude to Swami Vivekanand Subharti University and the Department of Languages for the warm invitation, excellent coordination, and gracious hospitality. This was followed by a vote of thanks from Ms. Vidhi Goswami, who conveyed heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Gurpyari Bhatnagar for her enlightening and thought-provoking lecture.

Overall, the session proved to be academically enriching and inspired participants to engage more critically with literary texts while deepening their understanding of contemporary literary theory.
