World Poetry Day
The Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Swami Vivekananda Subharti University, Meerut, organized a event on the occasion of World Poetry Day to support linguistic diversity and promote literary awareness through poetic expression. Observed annually on 21st March, World Poetry Day aims to encourage poetry readers, critics, publishers, and educators while giving poetry a new identity and recognition at both national and international levels.
The event commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. With the invocation of Goddess Saraswati, Dean Prof. Sudhir Tyagi, Head of the Department of Languages, Dr. Seema Sharma, and other faculty members lit the lamp, marking the official beginning of the celebration. The significance of poetry, its social and cultural relevance, and its role in different languages were profoundly discussed.
On this occasion, a poetry recitation and discussion session was held, in which students and faculty members of the university participated enthusiastically. The session featured poetry recitations on diverse themes, including social concerns, nature, love, struggle, and human emotions, showcasing the depth and power of poetry. This initiative aimed to enhance the promotion, dissemination, and creative strength of poetry.
Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of the Department of Languages, shared her insights, emphasizing that poetry is deeply connected to life and should always be perceived with a positive outlook. She highlighted that poetry is not just an expression of emotions but also a medium of introspection and inspiration, helping individuals steer away from negativity and maintain mental balance and peace.
Dean Prof. Sudhir Tyagi also expressed his thoughts, stating that poetry is closely linked to practical life. Quoting the renowned poet Kedarnath Agarwal, he conveyed the essence of perseverance and resilience through the following lines:
“Break the rock,
It will become beautiful.
Break it further,
It will become even more beautiful.”
Through these verses, he emphasized that struggles and efforts lead to new heights in life, making individuals stronger and more refined.
Students from various departments actively participated, showcasing their creativity and literary skills through poetry recitations. A major highlight of the event was the engagement of students from different colleges, fostering enthusiasm and unity in the appreciation of poetry.
Varsha Raj, a second-year student of Journalism and Mass Communication, presented Subhadra Kumari Chauhan’s poem, “Khoob Ladi Mardani, Woh Toh Jhansi Wali Rani Thi,” linking it to the contemporary status of women with a compelling recitation. Students including Bhumi, Samiya, Deepak, Fahad, and Megha etc. expressed their thoughts through their poetic compositions.
Prof. Rajeshwar Pal delivered an insightful discourse on the process of poetry composition, providing students with in-depth and significant knowledge about poetry and its nuances.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Preeti Sharma, expressing gratitude towards the university’s founder, Vice-Chancellor, Chief Executive Officer, faculty members, and students for their active participation and support. The entire program was efficiently moderated by Shikha Sharma, a postgraduate student in Hindi (2nd year).
The event witnessed the presence of esteemed faculty members, including Prof. Sudhir Tyagi (Dean), Dr. Seema Sharma (HoD, Languages), Prof. Rajeshwar Pal, Dr. Ashish Kumar, Dr. Nishi Raghav, Dr. Preeti Sharma, Dr. Swati Sharma, Sanya Agarwal, Dr. Ranveer Singh, Dr. Yashpal, Dr. Sapna, Dr. Alpana, along with students from Languages, Journalism & Mass Communication, and Liberal Arts departments.
The one-day celebration of World Poetry Day concluded successfully, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees and reinforcing the importance of poetry in society.
