Report on Hindi Diwas
The Department of Library and Information Science, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, organised Hindi Diwas program around the theme “Language, Books and Knowledge” on 14.09.2026. The event was conceived with a twofold purpose, to cultivate among students a deeper interest in, and regard for, the Hindi language, and to encourage them to articulate their thoughts in Hindi with clarity, ease, and confidence. A further objective was to nurture an appreciation for reading and books, and to draw students’ attention to the relationship between libraries and the wider society they serve.
As part of the program, students were assigned a range of topics on which they were asked to speak extemporaneously in Hindi for approximately one minute, without prior preparation. The topics included my favourite book, the importance of libraries, the significance of the Hindi language, favourite authors, contemporary reading habits, Hindi and the younger generation, the relationship between libraries and society, and reflections on one’s mother tongue. The exercise gave students an informal platform to demonstrate their powers of expression, and they responded with evident enthusiasm, sharing thoughtful perspectives on the Hindi language, books, reading culture, and the value of libraries. The format of the activity was deliberately designed to allow every student to participate with confidence, irrespective of prior preparation.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences remarked that Hindi is not merely a medium of expression but also an important conduit for engaging with Indian knowledge, literature, and culture. He encouraged students to express themselves freely in their own language while cultivating a closer relationship with books and reading. He further observed that activities of this nature play a valuable role in building students’ confidence, creativity, and communication skills.
The program was successfully conducted by Dr. Sapna Sharma. It was attended with enthusiasm by the entire faculty, including Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dr. Javed Khan, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Alpana, Dr. Surendra, Shalini Tyagi, Bhavana Joshi, and other members of staff, all of whom extended their wholehearted support toward the event’s success and shared their own reflections on the occasion. Commendable presentations were delivered by students Deepali, Saurabh, Gagandeep, Kanak Talian, Sakshi, Sumita, Shivani, Nisha, Udit, and Tanu, and the student body as a whole displayed keen interest in the proceedings throughout the program.
