Jyotirao Phule Subharti College of Physiotherapy Observes Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month with an Enlightening CME Session
In observance of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month, the Department of Neurological Physiotherapy at Jyotirao Phule Subharti College of Physiotherapy organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on August 26, 2025.
The CME focused on spreading awareness and enhancing clinical understanding of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that profoundly impacts mobility, independence, and quality of life.
The program began with a warm welcome to dignitaries, including Prof. (Dr.) Jasmine Anandabai, Dean and Prof. (Dr.) Amit Kumar Goel, Principal, Jyotirao Phule Subharti College of Physiotherapy.The keynote session was delivered by Dr. Vivek Tomer, Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Subharti Medical College, who provided in-depth insights into SMA’s pathology, advancements in genetic counseling, early diagnosis, and evolving treatment options. His knowledge-rich talk enhanced understanding and emphasized a holistic approach to SMA management.
The session further featured Dr. Kayinat Hassan, Assistant Professor, Jyotirao Phule Subharti College of Physiotherapy, who discussed evidence-based physiotherapy interventions in SMA. Her talk underscored the pivotal role of rehabilitation in improving respiratory function, posture, and daily living activities in individuals affected by SMA.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks to Dr. Vivek Tomer, appreciating his enlightening session and valuable contributions. The CME not only enriched the knowledge base of attendees but also reflected the university’s motto — “Where Education is a Passion” — by fostering a deeper, multidisciplinary understanding of rare neurological disorders.
