Educational tour
to Central Library, DU and National Science Museum
Raja Kunwar Singh Department of Library and Information Science Organized an educational tour at Central Library, Delhi University and National Science Museum, Delhi. Students of BLIS and MLIS were taken to Central Library, University of Delhi, New Delhi for educational tour under the guidance of Head of Department Dr. Sudhir Tyagi on dated 18 April 2025. Where Mrs. Pooja, Assistant Librarian guided all the students and took them on a tour of Library. All the students observed the various services and functions provided by the library. Along with seeing the print and digital collection stored in various departments of the library, they also got important information about them. Especially during the tour, the students showed special interest in knowing about the “RFID” technology being used in the library. They told that by using “RFID” technology, the important collection of the library can be protected from problems like theft etc. Apart from this, detailed information was provided about the various sources stored in the libraries. Also, various techniques of maintenance and preservation of various traditional and new sources were highlighted.
The main point of attraction for the students was the “Braille Library” of Delhi University. Mrs. Pooja told that Delhi University is dedicated to fulfilling the reading needs of visually impaired people and to develop the habit of reading in them. It provides services to all disabled students such as transcription and print of books in Braille, e-book facility for disabled students and screen reading software etc. Braille Library of Delhi University has assistive technologies like screen reading software, Angel Daisy Reader, MP3 player, microphone, laptop, subject related audios, CDs, geometry kit, abacus, Lex portable camera, lab and audio recording for accessing Braille library resources. Library in-charge Mrs. Pooja also gave a lecture on “Importance of e-Resources”. She explained how important different types of information sources are today. And while shedding light on the importance and role of e-resources and e-libraries in libraries for the increasing library collection today, she said that how can we keep this increasing collection balanced in today’s era and the desired material can be made available to the users in the shortest possible time through various software and automation. Libraries can be made economical.
The students also visited the ‘Science Museum’ located in Delhi. Which is a leading institution in popularizing science in North India, especially among students. Its main objective is to popularize science among the public, especially among students and to make efforts to achieve scientific civilization in the country. Along with this, the science and technical heritage of the country is to be preserved. All the students showed great enthusiasm in seeing all the materials stored in the museum. The students also visited the ‘Innovation Museum’ located in Delhi. They visited the ‘Hub’, ‘Hall of Nuclear Power’ and ‘Human Biology Gallery’, which gave them a direct experience of connecting science with life. The students also visited various exhibitions and models related to science technology, space robotics, bio-technology, environment and communication.
All the teachers of the department, Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Alpana, etc. were present on this visit. Everyone showed great enthusiasm in this visit and showed interest in learning about various technologies.
