Educational Visit to Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail, Meerut

Under the supervision of Justice Rajesh Chandra, Hon’ble Director, and Prof. (Dr.) Reena Bishnoi, Officiating Dean, Faculty of Law, the students of BA LL.B. IX Semester visited Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail, Meerut. The Law Club coordinated and arranged this visit with the objective of providing students practical exposure to jail administration and its functioning, thereby enhancing their experiential learning beyond classroom teaching.

As part of entry protocols, all students were hand-stamped by the jail authorities. A group of 27 students, accompanied by faculty members Mr. Harshit (Lecturer) and Dr. Afreen Almas (Assistant Professor), interacted with Dr. Viresh Raj Sharma, Senior Jail Superintendent. He briefed the students about the criminal justice system, functioning of prisons, prisoner categories, prison labour, wage structure, and daily routine of inmates.

The jail tour was coordinated by Ms. Kshama Sharma, Deputy Jailor, who guided the students through various sections of the facility. Students observed the kitchen area equipped with automated chapati-making machines, the dental room serviced by a Subharti University dentist, inmate residential barracks, the IGNOU education centre, solitary confinement zone, and the hospital ward with extensive bed capacity.

They also visited the factory unit, where inmates were engaged in stitching and sportswear production. Female students were taken to the women’s section, where they learned about prison provisions for women inmates and children living with them up to six years of age. They were shown the creche, women’s computer centre, and informed that most female inmates preferred stitching work over computer learning.

After completing all rounds, students returned with substantial learning and experiential understanding of prison administration, inmate life, and correctional functions.
