The Department of Library and Information Science, Swami Vivekananda Subharti University, Meerut organised a guest lecture titled “Intellectual Property Rights in the Digital Age: Role of Library and Librarians” on 13.03.2026. The invited speaker, Dr. M. P. Singh, Department of Library and Information Science, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, delivered an insightful and comprehensive address on this timely subject.
The primary objective of this guest lecture was to sensitise students and research scholars to the growing significance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) within the digital information landscape. The session sought to foster an informed understanding of the ethical and legal dimensions governing the use of digital resources, encompassing copyright compliance, responsible information use, open access principles, and plagiarism avoidance
The session was presided over by Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, who welcomed the distinguished guest speaker and remarked that as the availability of digital information resources continues to expand, so too does the imperative to develop a thorough understanding of intellectual property rights. In his address, Dr. M.P. Singh underscored that the importance of intellectual property rights has grown considerably in the contemporary digital era, particularly in light of the widespread use of digital resources, e-books, e-journals, and online databases. He emphasised that special attention must now be devoted to issues pertaining to copyright, licensing, and the ethical consumption of information. Dr. Singh articulated that librarians are not merely custodians of information, they serve as active promoters of copyright awareness, research ethics, and responsible information use. He stressed that adherence to copyright regulations, avoidance of plagiarism, and the practice of proper citation are indispensable competencies in today’s digital environment. Furthermore, he highlighted that library professionals must be thoroughly conversant with IPR-related matters so as to provide effective and accurate guidance to researchers and students.
The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks extended by Dr. Sapna Sharma. The programme was attended by faculty members of the department Dr. Javed Khan, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Alpana, and Mrs. Bhavna Joshi, along with students and research scholars.

Students and research scholars demonstrated a keen interest in the knowledge imparted and actively engaged in a lively question-and-answer session on topics related to the lecture.
