World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated globally every year on 26 April to raise awareness about the significance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in fostering innovation, creativity, and sustainable development. The day is observed under the guidance of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to promoting the protection of intellectual property worldwide.

For the year 2026, WIPO announced the theme: “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate” The theme highlights how intellectual property supports innovation in sports through technology, design, branding, media rights, broadcasting rights, sports equipment innovation, and entrepreneurship. It emphasizes the role of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs in shaping the future of the global sports industry.

On this occasion, the IPR Cell of Research & Development Cell, under the aegis of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), organized an IPR Awareness Session to strengthen awareness and understanding of intellectual property among faculty members, researchers, students, innovators, and aspiring entrepreneurs. The event was also aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development (Goal 14 – Life below Water), emphasising the role of innovation and protected research in achieving sustainability goals and environmental conservation.
