Quiz Competition on International Literacy Day

Extension Activity- Quiz Competition on International Literacy Day,  8th September 2025

The Department of Education, Faculty of Education, Swami Vivekanand Subharti  University, Meerut, successfully organized an Extension Activity on the occasion of International Literacy Day in different internship schools. The program was designed to spread awareness among school students about the importance of literacy as the first step towards education and empowerment. The activity was aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 1 – No Poverty ,SDG 5 – Gender Equality, SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities

Objectives of the Activity

To make students understand the value and necessity of literacy in daily life.

To strengthen the connection between pupil teachers and school children.

To promote the idea that literacy is the foundation for education, equality, and national development.

Prof. (Dr.) Indira Singh, Head, Department of Education, congratulated the winners and participants, and shared her best wishes. She emphasized that such activities not only create awareness among school students but also give valuable practical exposure to pupil teachers during internship. Literacy is the first step of education. Education is broader than literacy; it makes us skilled, responsible, and good human beings.  She said that, If every child studies well, India will become a strong and developed country. On this occasion, the activity was exclusively coordinated by Dr. Reeba Devi, Assistant Professor (Event Coordinator), who took the lead and ensured the smooth and successful conduct of the program Dr. Reeba explained that International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on 8th September across the world. It was declared by UNESCO in 1966 and celebrated first time in 1967.The aim is to spread awareness that literacy is a basic human right and very important for personal and national growth along with the meaning as follow.

Literate (Sakshar): A person who can read and write simple words/sentences.

Illiterate (Nirakshar): A person who cannot read or write at all.

Educated (Shikshit): A person who has gone through formal schooling, college or university and gained knowledge, skills, and values along with a certificate/degree.

On this occasion, pupil teachers prepared posters and charts and explained to the school children why literacy is important for their future. Students showed keen interest and actively participated in the interaction. The program was blessed with the guidance and support of school principals:

All participants took part with great enthusiasm, making the program a grand success. The Extension Awareness Activity on Literacy Day proved to be a meaningful effort towards promoting literacy, equality, and social responsibility. It successfully met the objectives of spreading awareness among students and society, thereby contributing to the vision of a literate and empowered nation.
