Seminar on “Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions”

 Objectives of the Event:

The primary objective of the Anti‐Ragging Seminar was to create awareness among students, faculty, and staff about the detrimental effects of ragging and to emphasize the importance of fostering a safe and respectful campus environment.

 Description:

On 13-08-2025, Faculty of Education, SVSU Meerut organized an awareness session seminar on “Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions”. This seminar is being part of National Anti Ragging Week (12th -18th August).The aim of the seminar was to make the newly admitted students of the university aware about the prevention of ragging as well as the old students about the laws of the country regarding ragging and how it affects the lives of the victims. All the newly admitted students of the Faculty of Education were present in this session. More than 105 students attended this session. Since ragging has become a problem which causes fear and shock to the new students in the country,

On this occasion, Dean of Faculty of Education, Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Kumar appreciated the effort of Coordinators and gave their best wishes for the special Seminar  he said that the introduction of new students should be done during the fresher party so that positive thinking can be generated in the new students and they can mingle with the old students and get their support. On this occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Anoj Raj, Department of Education, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut said that ragging refers to any kind of abuse, harassment or humiliation done by seniors to juniors, especially in educational institutions. It is harmful and illegal, many countries have implemented strict laws to stop it. Creating a safe and respectful environment should be our priority.

 Prof. Dr. Indira Singh, Head of Education Department,  was the speaker of Seminar  In his speech he said that. Ragging refers to the practice of teasing, abusing, or playing practical jokes on someone, especially newcomers, students. It’s often associated with educational institutions, but it can occur in various settings. However, it’s important to note that ragging can have serious consequences and is often considered a form of bullying or harassment.  He focused on the Concept of Ragging, Consequences of Ragging and the Provision of Anti‐  Ragging Act and empowering participants with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities.

On this occasion, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Kumar appreciated the effort of the coordinators and wished them all the best for the special seminar. He said that the introduction of new students should be done during the fresher party so that positive thinking can be inculcated in the new students and they can mingle with the old students and get their support. Creating a safe and respectful environment should always be the priority. He also urged the students that their behavior should be ethical and cooperative in nature.

The entire program was organized by Anti-Ragging Coordinator (Education Faculty) Dr. Sangeeta, Assistant Professor, Education Department. Faculty and students from  Faculty of Education, BPT, Pharmacy, Fine Arts and Journalism colleges were present to make this program successful.

Outcome of the event:

1. The students and other participants were well informed about the prevention of anti-ragging and its legal utility.
