Seminar on Role of HEI’s in Achieving Gender Equality
University Internal Complaint Committee has observed a Pakhwada on “Elimination of Violence against women & Discrimination against women” (25th November – 10th December 2022) – an initiative of 15 days of activism concluded on the day that commemorates the International Human Rights Day (10 December). In this process of said Pakhwada, Sardar Patel Subharti Institute of Law organized the Seminar on the occasion of International Human Rights Day in association with Internal Complaint Committee on the topic –“ROLE OF HEIs IN ACHIEVING GENDER EQUALITY”.
The seminar firstly started with the inaugural session. Formation of dais and lamp lightening was done. Later Ms. Afreen Almas gave a welcome address to all dignitaries, Dean, faculties and students. The chief guest was welcomed by presenting a plant, the other dignitaries were welcomed by Deans of various departments. Ms. Anjum played a detailed video on the theme –‘What are Human Rights?’
Ist Academic Session
Prof. (Dr.) Vaibhav Goyal Bhartiya while highlighting the theme of the seminar said that for centuries the patriarchal society across the world has made men believe that they are special and it’s time to remove this gender based inequality. But referring to various international conventions, he said that since 1979, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEWEM) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Apart from this, he also talked about the convention called International Civil and Political Rights and said that this convention also talks about equal rights for women. Apart from this, he also talked about the Universal Declaration on Human Rights that all these conventions advocate giving equal rights to women.
Another speaker, Dr. Usha Sawhney talking on women empowerment said that if every person wants to empower women, then they have to start from their home first because if the woman is strong in the house then only then a healthy and aware society can be built.
IInd Academic Session
Professor Vineeta Nikhil said in her address that today we are talking about women’s equality, but we also have to keep in mind that they should not misuse the rights that they are given. She also explained the role of ICC in an academic institution. She also focused that function of ICC are- to prevent discrimination and sexual harassment against girls by promoting gender amity among students and employees and to conduct periodical programmes on women empowerment. To provide a conducive environment and congenial atmosphere for women.
Dr. Abhay M. Shankaregowda said that higher education and research are key instruments for empowerment and social change. Universities can be powerful institutions for promoting gender equality, diversity and inclusion, not only in the higher education context, but also in society at large. Valedictory Session
Dr. Shalya Raj said in her speech that if we talk about giving equal rights to women as men, then first of all women have to be proficient in self-defense. If women are proficient in self-defense, then only they will be able to stop any kind of violent behavior against them.
Major General Dr. G.K. Thapliyal, Vice-Chancellor, Subharti University said in his presidential speech that women have been empowered since the Vedic period, but today we need to make women aware through sensitization programs on that subject, it is a thoughtful topic in itself. Justice Rajesh Chandra stated in his concluding remarks that if you see a woman in trouble, then do help her.
Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Reena Bishnoi, Presiding Officer, ICC. During the program Dr. Prem Chandra, Ms. Ana Sisodia, Mr. Ajayraj, Ms. Anjum Jahan, Dr. Ram Naval and Mr. Mayank were present.
