Suicide Prevention Awareness Program

The Department of Liberal Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, organized an awareness programme on suicide prevention to enhance mental health awareness, promote early identification of risk factors and the importance of seeking timely help. The session included valuable inputs from the Head of Department, Dr. Jyoti Gaur, along with distinguished speakers Dr. Seema Sharma, Dr. Antul Tyagi, and Dr. Shyamashish Gupta. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Mohini Mittal, Assistant Professor and anchored by the host Vanshika Vats of B.A Honors II Sem.

During the Lecture, Dr. Seema Sharma underscored the critical importance of psychological well-being and the role of awareness and communication in preventing suicidal tendencies. She also referred to legislative developments such as the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, which recognizes suicide attempts as a mental health concern requiring care and support rather than punishment, while also pointing out that social stigma continues to hinder help-seeking behavior. She emphasized the importance of mental well-being and highlighted early warning signs such as emotional instability, withdrawal, and behavioral changes. She also discussed the role of awareness and communication in reducing stigma and encouraging individuals to seek help.

The experts collectively discussed the early warning signs, including emotional instability, withdrawal from social interactions, noticeable behavioral changes, and declining interest in daily activities. Special attention was drawn to young individuals, particularly those between the ages of 15–29 years, as a highly vulnerable group.

Dr. Shyamashish Gupta focused on practical coping strategies, encouraging students to adopt healthy habits such as regular physical activity, adequate sleep, positive affirmations, engaging in constructive activities, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Dr. Antul Tyagi elaborated on the significance of psychosocial factors, emphasizing the value of meaningful relationships, emotional support systems, and social connectedness in safeguarding mental health. Dr. Jyoti Gaur also indicates the awareness signs to all the students and discussed the importance of sharing problems to your elders, friends and family members so that they good guide towards a positive path as they also have passed that critical phase of life.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Mohini Mittal, appreciating the contributions of all speakers and participants. The presence and support of the other faculty members Dr. Amrita, Dr. Durvesh, Dr. Juli, Dr. Shalini, Dr. Ajay, Dr. Dinesh & Mr. Kapil was sincerely appreciated, as their participation contributed significantly to the success and effectiveness of the programme.
