World Environment Day Celebration

The Department of Library and Information Science and the Central Library, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut  jointly organised a significant academic and awareness programme titled “Book Exhibition and Green Library Oath” (Pustak Pradarshani evam Green Library Shapath) on the occasion of World Environment Day. The event was conceived and executed with the dual objective of celebrating the global significance of environmental conservation and reinforcing the role of academic libraries as pivotal agents of environmental consciousness and sustainable development within the university ecosystem. The programme aimed to raise awareness among students, faculty, and library users regarding environmental conservation and sustainable development, to promote the Green Library concept encompassing energy efficiency, digital services, and plastic reduction, to formalise the department’s ecological commitment through the Green Library Oath, and to align departmental activities with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, who emphasised that environmental conservation is a continuous collective responsibility and that libraries serve as vital centres for propagating ecological awareness. A curated Book Exhibition featuring literature on environmental conservation, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development was organised as the intellectual centrepiece of the programme. The defining highlight was the administration of the Green Library Oath by Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, through which all participants collectively pledged to conserve energy, reduce plastic use, and adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle. The event also featured open deliberations on individual and institutional environmental responsibilities, fostering a spirit of shared purpose among attendees. Participants included faculty members Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dr. Manoj Tripathi, Dr. Javed Khan, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Alpana, Ms. Shalini Tyagi, Ms. Bhavana, and Dr. Ashutosh, along with all students and staff of the department.

The programme successfully generated heightened environmental consciousness among participants. It effectively introduced the Green Library paradigm to the university community, resulting in a formal institutional commitment to sustainable library practices through the collective oath. The Book Exhibition stimulated academic interest in environmental literature, while the event’s alignment with UN SDGs reinforced the library’s identity as a socially responsible knowledge institution. The programme received unanimous appreciation and is expected to serve as a model for regular sustainability-oriented departmental initiatives.
