World Suicide Prevention Month Celebration
On 12th Sept 2024, Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Department of Home Science commenced an initiative to celebrate Suicide Prevention Month with a series of activities to be conducted each Thursday throughout September. The series started with an impactful activity, “Embrace Yourself,” performed by Ms. Urvashi Sharma( Assistant Professor). The activity aimed to promote mental well-being and self-care among students by encouraging them to engage in reflective journaling exercises. The session had an introductory session on suicide, its causes, and prevention by Ms Urvashi Sharma and Dr Shalu Nehra.
During the session, students were asked to write responses to prompts such as an appreciation letter to themselves, a list of ten things they are grateful for, and a thank-you note for someone significant in their lives. These exercises aimed to help students recognize their self-worth, express gratitude, and foster a positive mindset.
The activity was well-received, and all participants expressed enthusiasm and enjoyment throughout the session. The journaling exercises provided a space for introspection, self-compassion, and gratitude, which are crucial elements in promoting mental health and preventing suicide.
Overall, the “Embrace Yourself” activity was a meaningful beginning of a series of activities coming ahead by the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Department of Home Science to raise awareness about mental health and empower students to take steps toward self-care and emotional well-being with the constant support of HOD Dr. Nishma Singh and effective co-operation of all faculty members.
