The Department of Library and Information Science, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, organised a productive and enriching academic study tour to the Central Library of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, on 20.05.2026, for students of the B.Lib and M.Lib programmes. The primary objective of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional library practice.
Upon arrival at JNU, the students were warmly received and the tour was facilitated by Assistant Librarian Mr. Veereshwar, whose expertise and enthusiasm made the experience both informative and engaging. Deputy Librarian Dr. Manorama Tripathi extended invaluable support throughout the visit, offering students comprehensive insights into library management systems, contemporary information services, and the effective utilisation of digital resources. Together, the two professionals guided the students through the multifaceted operations of one of India’s premier university libraries, illuminating the role of technology in transforming modern library ecosystems.
Students had the opportunity to observe and interact with several advanced sections of the Central Library. The Digital Resource Centre offered a hands-on understanding of e-resources, online databases, digital repositories, and RFID-based circulation systems. The library’s automation infrastructure and classification and cataloguing systems were explained in detail, giving students a practical appreciation of the workflows that underpin large-scale academic libraries. The sessions on information retrieval and research support services were particularly valuable for students preparing to enter the profession.
Among the highlights of the tour were two sections that drew exceptional interest from all participants. The Cyber Library a state-of-the-art facility equipped with networked computer terminals and access to a wide range of online scholarly resources offered students an immersive experience of digital information access in a structured academic environment. Equally inspiring was the Helen Keller Unit, a dedicated support section designed to cater to the academic and informational needs of visually impaired and differently-abled students. This unit, equipped with assistive technologies and specialised reading aids, stood as a testament to the library’s commitment to inclusivity and equal access to knowledge. Students expressed deep admiration for this initiative, acknowledging its significance in building an equitable learning environment.
Reflecting on the purpose of such educational endeavours, Dr. Sudhir Tyagi emphasised that academic study tours play a vital role in the holistic development of library science students. They not only enhance subject knowledge and professional skills but also prepare students to navigate the evolving challenges of the information profession with confidence and competence. The key objectives of the tour familiarising students with the functioning of a modern university library, providing practical exposure to digital library services and e-resources, and fostering research and information literacy skills were comprehensively achieved.
The visit was attended by all faculty members of the department, including Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dr. Javed Khan, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Alpana, and Mrs. Bhavna. The students demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm throughout the tour, actively engaging with library staff, asking pertinent questions, and exploring the various technological systems on display. They unanimously described the experience as exceptionally enriching and professionally rewarding, and returned with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the dynamic world of library and information science.
