Description: –

Sardar Patel Subharti Institute of Law observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the objective of promoting awareness, inclusion and respect for persons with disabilities. Students were introduced to the significance of the day and this year’s global theme — “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” Dr. Afreen Almas delivered an insightful lecture highlighting the role of inclusive societies in achieving equality and human dignity. The session covered the relationship between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and disability inclusion, emphasizing how global development cannot be achieved without equal opportunities for all. Dr. Almas also discussed intersectionality in disability, linking gender, identity and social structures with disability concerns to broaden student understanding. Honorable Justice Rajesh Chandra emphasized the compensatory mechanisms available for disabilities arising from accidents under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. He urged students to thoughtfully consider the real-life challenges faced by persons with disabilities and highlighted the vital role of educated youth in dismantling attitudinal barriers and fostering an inclusive society. Prof. (Dr.) Reena Bishnoi explained to students about the existing disability-accessible facilities available in Subharti Law College and at the University Disability Centre, helping students identify institutional support systems. The activity concluded with the vote of thanks by Mr. Ashutosh Deshwal.

The Outcome of the Activity: –

  1. Students gained awareness about disability rights, inclusion and the global theme, strengthening their understanding of social responsibility.
  2. Students developed sensitivity toward intersectional disability issues, including gender dimensions and institutional accessibility needs.
  3. Students became familiar with available support systems such as disability-friendly facilities within the Law College and the University Disability Centre.
  4. The session motivated students to advocate inclusive practices, encouraging them to contribute to accessibility, empathy and equality in academic and societal spaces.
