English Seminar on the Theme: Contribution of Indian English Writers

The second day of the ongoing University-Level English Literary Week, organized by the Department of Languages, unfolded with an intellectually enriching Paper Presentation Seminar centered on the theme “Contribution of Indian English Writers.” The session offered students a dynamic platform to demonstrate research aptitude, literary insight, and academic presentation skills, marking yet another significant step in the program’s commitment to student development.

The proceedings commenced with Dr. Rafat Khanam, Programme Convenor and In-charge -English and Foreign Languages, presenting a comprehensive briefing on the objectives and structure of the programme and extending a warm welcome to the dignitaries, faculty members, and participants. This was followed by a ceremonial planter presentation to the guest of the day by Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of Department, and Dr. Rafat Khanam, symbolizing appreciation and academic camaraderie.

The event was evaluated by Dr. Preeti Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, FASS, who served as the judge. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of cultivating research-oriented thinking and academic writing skills. She encouraged students to pursue publication in credible, non-paid journals indexed in reputed databases such as Scopus and highlighted ethical scholarship and originality as hallmarks of academic excellence.

The programme was conducted with confidence and clarity by Ms. Samiya Siddiqui and Ms. Anushka Sharma, B.A. English (Hons.) students of the Department of Languages, whose effective compering maintained the flow and engagement of the session.

Participants presented insightful papers on a range of eminent writers and texts, including discussions on Valmiki’s Joothan, the social realism of Mulk Raj Anand, the narrative charm of R. K. Narayan, the philosophical and poetic vision of Rabindranath Tagore, and the evocative storytelling of Ruskin Bond. The presentations reflected commendable research aptitude, analytical engagement, and interpretative depth — an achievement that added significantly to the academic growth and confidence of the participating students.

Dr. Rafat Khanam appreciated the participants’ dedication and noted that the seminar exemplified how structured academic forums can transform classroom learning into meaningful scholarly engagement, nurturing both intellectual curiosity and communicative competence.

Objectives

  • To strengthen students’ spoken and written proficiency in English through academic presentation platforms.
  • To cultivate literary sensitivity and interpretative engagement with Indian English writing.
  • To provide opportunities for developing confidence and public-speaking competence.
  • To encourage interdisciplinary academic participation across faculties.

Outcomes

  • Participants exhibited enhanced confidence in research presentation and public speaking.
  • Analytical and argumentation skills were strengthened through structured literary discourse.
  • Students demonstrated notable research aptitude, contributing to their academic achievements.
  • Deeper engagement with literary texts encouraged connections between theory and interpretation and motivated continued scholarly participation.

Results of the Competition were declared as follows:

  • First Position: Rithik Dhigan — Department of Languages
  • Second Position: Pawni Arora — Law College
  • Third Position: Samiya Siddiqui — Department of Languages

The session was enriched by the gracious presence of university dignitaries and faculty members including Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Tyagi, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of Department; Dr. Swati Sharma; Dr. Abhijit; Mr. Ankit; Ms. Sanya, Dr. Ranveer singh, Dr. Nishi raghav, Dr. Manisha , Dr. Ashish, Ms. Bhavana aJoshi, Ms. Soni Chauhan, Ms. Anchal along with faculty members and students from various departments.

The seminar concluded on a vibrant note, reaffirming the spirit of academic exploration and collaborative learning that defines the Literary Week, while building anticipation for the forthcoming events celebrating language, literature, and scholarly exchange.
