Guest lecture on “Gender Sensitive Spaces Through Soft-Skills Development”
The Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, in association with Gender Sensitization Cell & Women Empowerment Cell , organized a guest lecture on the topic “Gender Sensitive Spaces Through Soft-Skills Development” on 25th May 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at the HR Lab, Department of Languages. The resource person for the session was Dr. Usha Sawhney, Professor, Department of English, Shaheed Mangal Pandey Govt. Girls P.G. College, Meerut. The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Seema Sharma, Head, Department of Languages & under the co-ordinatorship of Dr.Rafat Khanam, Incharge ,Department Of English & Foreign Languages.
Program
Dr. Sawhney spoke about using soft skills like inclusive language, active listening, and empathy to create gender-sensitive spaces in classrooms and workplaces. She shared practical examples and interacted with students and faculty.
Key Outcomes
- 1. Increased Awareness: All the participants understood gender sensitivity as a soft skill.
- Practical Learning: Students learned to identify and use inclusive language in daily communication.
- Future Action: The Department will review official notices for inclusive language. Students proposed a monthly “Inclusive Communication Circle”.
- SDG Contribution: The event supported UN SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
Conclusion
The lecture was insightful and interactive. It helped students and faculty understand how small changes in communication can make academic spaces more respectful and inclusive.
