“Media and Theatre: Exploring the Intersection” 

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, organized a guest lecture on the topic “Media and Theatre: Exploring the Intersection” on Thursday, 8th May 2025. Prof. Danish Iqbal, AKJ MCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, was invited as the guest speaker, one who is a renowned theater artist and a media communicator.

Addressing the students, Prof. Iqbal said that the relationship between media and theatre is multifaceted and dynamic, with each influencing the other in various ways. He discussed the impact of theatre on media; highlighting how theatre’s rich tradition of storytelling has inspired media formats like film and television. He also emphasized how theatre’s focus on performance and live interaction has shaped the media’s approach to character development and audience engagement.

Prof. Iqbal further explained that theatre’s ability to tackle complex social issues has influenced media’s approach to addressing similar topics. He also discussed the impact of media on theatre, citing the introduction of new storytelling methods like digital theatre and online performances, which have expanded theatre’s reach.

The Head of the Department, Journalism and Mass communication, SVSU,  Prof.(Dr.) S.C. Thaledi, spoke about the intersection of media and theatre, highlighting how many theatrical productions are adapted into media formats like films and television shows. He also noted that media often incorporates theatrical elements like dramatic lighting and sound design to enhance storytelling.

Prof. Thaledi emphasized that the future of media and theatre is based on digital innovation, and the integration of digital technologies will continue to shape the relationship between the two. He added that the rise of streaming services and online platforms will require theatre and media professionals to adapt and innovate, leading to new forms of collaborative storytelling that will push the boundaries of both art forms.
