“Khadi Raag” Fashion Show

The Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Nandlal Bose Subharti College of Fine Arts and Fashion Design at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University hosted an exclusive fashion show, Khadi Raag, on 4th October 2024, as part of the two-day Khadi Utsav. The event, held at the Satyajit Ray Auditorium, celebrated India’s rich legacy of Khadi and other handloom fabrics, merging tradition with modern fashion through the creative designs of students.
The fashion show was graced by Mr. Tapan Sharma, Deputy Director, Weavers’ Service Centre, Meerut, as the Chief Guest, who emphasized the importance of promoting Khadi and handloom textiles. Mr. Tilak Raj, Assistant Director, Weavers’ Service Centre, was honored as the Guest of Honour. The event also featured Jamdani weavers from West Bengal and artisans from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, showcasing their beautiful handloom creations.
The judging panel consisted of notable industry experts, including Ms. Alisha, Director of AMPHORA – A UNISEX SALON, and Ms. Shivali, a Dynamic Fashion Designer. They evaluated the collections on innovation, craftsmanship, and creativity, celebrating the students’ impressive work in presenting Khadi and handloom fabrics in contemporary silhouettes.
Khadi Raag featured six thematic rounds, each highlighting a unique interpretation of Khadi and handloom fabrics:
  1. The Colour of Durga – A tribute to the strength and vibrancy of the goddess Durga through bold colors and powerful designs.
  2. Illusory Layer – Exploring the concept of layers and textures in handloom fabrics, showcasing depth and intricacy.
  3. Cultural Colours – A celebration of India’s diverse cultures through traditional color palettes and fabric choices.
  4. Petals of Khadi – Delicate and floral-inspired designs reflecting the natural beauty of Khadi.
  5. Praguccha: The Khadi Shobha – A regal collection celebrating the grandeur of Khadi as a timeless fabric of elegance.
  6. A special collection of Jamdani Sarees by Jamdani weavers from West Bengal, adding authenticity and heritage to the show.

The top three collections were awarded special titles:

  • First Prize went to The Colour of Durga.
  • Second Prize was awarded to Illusory Layer.
  • Third Prize was presented for Cultural Colours.

The awards will be officially announced during the Exhibition and Sale of Khadi and handloom products on 5th October 2024.

In collaboration with the Weavers’ Service Centre (Ministry of Textiles) and Khadi Gramodyog Samiti, Bhadangpur, the event provided a platform for artisans to showcase their crafts, allowing students to engage directly with the weavers. Jamdani weavers gave a special demonstration, sharing insights into their traditional weaving techniques.

The evening concluded with a vote of thanks from the HOD of Fashion and Textile Design, Dr. Neha Singh, expressing appreciation to the university’s leadership, collaborators, and supporters for their role in making Khadi Raag a resounding success. The event was live-streamed on the university’s social media channels, bringing national attention to the celebration of Khadi as a symbol of sustainability and Indian heritage.
