Poetry Recitation on the Theme “Generational Echoes”
English Literary Week–2026 (5–11 February 2026)
Day 5 – University-Level Skill Development Programme
The fifth day of the University-Level Skill Development Programme under English Literary Week–2026 featured an engaging Poetry Recitation Competition on the theme “Generational Echoes,” organized by the Department of Languages in collaboration with the Women Empowerment Committee and the Gender Sensitization Cell of SVSU. The event provided a meaningful platform to explore voices, concerns, and cultural reflections that resonate across generations through poetic expression.
The program commenced with a formal welcome followed by the traditional sapling presentation ceremony to the Judge of the day, Dr. Nisha Singh, Associate Professor in the Management College and Senior Proctor of SVSU. Upholding the eco-conscious and respectful cultural tradition of the university, Dr. Seema Sharma, HOD, Languages and Dr. Rafat Khanam, Convenor and in-charge of English and Foreign Languages presented the sapling as a token of regard. Following the ceremony, Dr. Sarika Abhay, Convenor of the Gender Sensitization Cell, and Dr. Anshul Trivedi, Chairperson of the Women Empowerment Committee, shared their blessings and encouraged students to express themselves fearlessly.
Addressing the gathering, the Program Convenor and In-charge of English and Foreign Languages, Dr. Rafat Khanam, welcomed and motivated students, saying, “The stage symbolizes emotional and artistic expression and participants today are not merely competitors but emerging poets and poetesses gaining recognition for their creativity and sensitivity.”
Dr. Rafat Khanam, also a member of the Women Empowerment Committee of SVSU, recited her self-composed poem “Equal Property Rights,” a powerful generational echo advocating female rights and empowerment that resonated deeply with the audience.
During the introduction, it was ensured that the medium of recitation was English and participants were permitted to present both self-composed and published poetry. It was unexpectedly inspiring to witness students raising their voices through original compositions reflecting experiences genuinely faced and felt by them. Students from various streams and programmes of Subharti University — including Devanshi, Pawni, Jaydeep Arora, Samia Siddiqui, Aditi Baxter, Jai Shree, Vidhi Goswami, Jiya, Jyoti Chaudhary, Chhavi Tyagi, Akanksha Dhigan, Tayi Techi, Zahira Mehnaz Hasan and others — filled the stage with the melody and fragrance of poetry.
Their poems addressed significant concerns such as patriarchy, gender discrimination, male–female inequality, women empowerment, family support systems, child nourishment, and other subtle generational echoes that are deeply felt yet often unheard. The audience appreciated the thought-provoking and out-of-the-box perspectives shared by the participants.
After careful evaluation by the judge, the results were announced:
