Organized by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, organized an insightful workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights: Patent Search, Drafting and Filing” on Tuesday, 15th April 2025. The event was held at the Conference Hall, 6th Floor, DJMC and was attended by faculty members and students.

The session was conducted by Dr. Nisha Rana, Assistant Professor of Zoology and Incharge & Coordinator of the IPR Cell, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University. Dr. Rana delivered an engaging and informative lecture on the growing importance of Intellectual Property Rights in the academic and research domains.

In her address, Dr. Rana explained the various types of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications. She walked the participants through the entire process of patent filing, highlighting key stages like patent search, drafting of claims, submission, examination, and grant.

A major highlight of her session was the practical demonstration of how to perform a patent search and verify details using the official Indian government IPR website. She guided the attendees on navigating the portal, using the patent search tool, and understanding patent status and publication information.

Dr. Rana also briefed the audience about the official offices of the Indian Patent Office, located in: Delhi (Head Office), Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. These offices handle filing, examination, and grant processes for respective jurisdictions and can also be approached for physical submissions or in-person queries.

Prof. (Dr.) S.C. Thaledi, Head of the Department, explained the broader impact of IPR on innovation, academia, and creative industries. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Preeti Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. She opened the session by emphasizing the growing need for IPR awareness among students and researchers in the digital age.

The session was highly interactive, with a Q&A segment that encouraged participants to raise practical doubts related to filing procedures, copyright of student projects, and protection of original research.

The department extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nisha Rana for sharing her expertise and looks forward to organizing more such knowledge-driven programs in the future. Mr. Ram Prakash Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Ms. Shelly Sharma, Assistant Professor and Mr. Shikeb Majeed, Assistant Lecturer were present in the workshop along with all the students.
