A Hands-on Korean Calligraphy Workshop

A Hands-on Korean Calligraphy Workshop was conducted on 10-11 April 2026 at Department of Languages, Rahul Sankrityayan  Subharti School of Linguistics and Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Swami Vivekananda Subharti University. The workshop aimed to introduce students to the artistic and cultural dimensions of the Korean language through the practice of traditional calligraphy. The session was conducted by Mr. Ayush Priyam, Korean Language Trainer  who provided the students a creative and meditative approach to language learning. Through guided activities and practical demonstrations, students explored the beauty of Hangul while developing a deeper cultural understanding of the Korean language. The whole session was supervised by the In-charge of English & Foreign Languages- Dr. Rafat Khanam ,  and led by  Dr. Seema Sharma , Head of the Department of Languages. On 10th April 2026, students were introduced to the history of Korean calligraphy and were familiarized with various calligraphy materials and tools. On 11th April 2026, participants practiced guided stroke order techniques and created their final calligraphy work under expert supervision.

Objectives

  • To introduce students to the aesthetic and philosophical aspects of the Korean writing system (Hangul).
  • To encourage students to learn Korean through interactive activities, including learning Korean proverbs for calligraphy practice.
  • To help students connect with the Korean language beyond its functional and communicative use.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students successfully internalized the correct stroke order (pil-sun) and understood the geometric logic of the script.
  • Participants reported improved cognitive engagement with Hangul and identified the activity as one of their favorite learning experiences.
  • The session enabled students to appreciate the artistic heritage of Korea, making the language feel more accessible and personal.

Activity Highlights

  • Traditional Calligraphy Methods: Students practiced writing Hangul using specialized paint brushes and ink on chart paper, allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of character balance and structure.
  • Focus on Structural Logic: The workshop emphasized the geometric and artistic flow of Hangul, helping students move from basic writing practice to appreciating the script as an art form.
  • Creative Expression: Through calligraphy practice, students engaged in experiential learning that combined creativity, language acquisition, and cultural competence.

The workshop provided students with a practical and engaging introduction to Korean calligraphy and culture. Through hands-on practice and expert guidance from Mr. Ayush Priyam, Ishika, Vanshika and Aarav ,the Korean language students developed a deeper appreciation for Hangul and its artistic tradition. The sessions not only enhanced their understanding of the Korean language but also offered a creative approach to language learning. Overall, the workshop was successful in fostering cultural awareness and student engagement under the supervision of Dr. Rafat Khanam and Dr. Seema Sharma.
