“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”
A half-day workshop on Art Therapy for the future doctors (interns and students) of the Community Medicine Department was organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts on July 11th, 2022. This activity was conducted under the Wellness Centre of SVSU under the guidance of Dr. Rahul Bansal, Chairperson, University Wellness Committee and Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Medical College, SVSU.
For the benefit of medical students, such programs have to be held often, according to Dr. Pintu Mishra, Dean & Principal, Faculty of Fine Arts. The session was directed by Dr. Neha Singh, a member of the wellness committee and the head of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Fashion & Textile Design. About 40 interns and students took part. Dr. Neha Singh gave an introduction at the first session. The idea of art therapy was explained to the students. Mr. Pankaj, an assistant professor in the painting department, led the workshop on free sketching. Students made paintings using only colour and no tools, as well as diverse drawings. They were then escorted to the dance studio for dance therapy, where they engaged in free-motion dancing. It turned out to be an excellent session. Students and interns took part with great enthusiasm and zest. It helped increase their attention span while decreasing their frustration. Art Therapy uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.
Students greatly appreciated the art therapy session and we received fantastic feedback from the members including:

“The art therapy session elicited some surprising responses that I don’t think many of us expected, almost a ‘freeing’ experience in a strange way’ Thank you for making our Day such a success.” – Shreya Singh (MBBS-2017)
“I enjoyed the day thoroughly. Each activity was very valuable, allowing me to absorb the very essence of art and mindfulness, feeling the value of both. I felt that you provided a very safe space for each of us to be ourselves and show our strengths and vulnerabilities. A very big thank you. I will be looking into your other training”. – Yash Pratap Singh (MBBS- 2020)
