Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav – The Indian Languages Festival

To spark and encourage an enthusiasm for learning Indian languages, Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav was celebrated by the Department of Languages, on 10th December 2022 on the birthday of “Mahakavi Bharati”, Subramania Bharati, the great nationalist poet, freedom fighter and a social reformer in Tamil Nadu.

Indian Languages Festival was jubilantly celebrated to give a sense of unity and introduce us to the beautiful cultural heritage and diversity of India.

The curtain raiser event was “My Language My Signature” campaign followed by a series of events like “State/Region Ethnic Dress Day”, felicitation of students from various states to light the “Lamp of Integration”, Downloading of “Translation app” on mobiles/tabs, Poster making competition, Essay writing competition, “Campaign of unity on social media” inviting views of Language enthusiast, faculty members and students dialects in the university to have a no-tongues barred conversation.

Manoeuvring that India has a rich linguistic heritage and visualising Indian languages as a great tool for national unity, University students from various states and union territories of the country were encouraged to learn the importance of Indian languages and that these languages share common phonetics and scripts, they have common grammatical structures, and the origins and sources of the vocabularies are from classical languages of India. Their diversities are also linguistically as rich as their inter-influences under the ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’ initiative.

Celebrations during the ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav’ defined the social fabric of our country, ‘Diversity in Unity’, which was well echoed by students’ dance and singing performances giving a glimpse of our harmonious coexistence and love. Hon’ble V.C Sir Maj Gen (Dr) G.K.Thapliyal, SM (Retd.) intensified that Bharatiya Bhashas, with their inherent similarities and commonalities are very important elements of the concept of ‘Diversity in Unity’ and serve to bind us together. Our Indian languages have co-existed, complemented and nurtured each other throughout the ages. Hon’ble CEO Ma’am Dr Shalya Raj accentuated that languages shape the mind and wisdom of the society and bring the people together.

There is a need to strengthen ‘language harmony,’ to develop an environment for learning along with propensity to love and enjoy the ‘neighbouring language.

’ She pointed up learning/speaking of another Indian language, propagating the idea as a matter of joy and cherishing experience.
