The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts is visualized as a Centre encompassing the study and experience of all the arts – each form with its own integrity, within a dimension of mutual interdependence, interrelated with nature, social structure and cosmology. This view of the arts, integrated with, and essential to the larger matrix of human culture, is predicated for Smt. Gandhi’s recognition of the role for the arts as essential to the integral quality of person, at home and in society. It partakes of the holistic worldview so powerfully articulated throughout Indian tradition, and emphasized by modern Indian leaders from Mahatma Gandhi to Rabindranath Tagore.
The students of BLIS and MLIS of Raja Kunwar Singh Subharti Department of Library and Information Science of Swami Vivekananda Subharti University were taken on an educational tour to Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi under the supervision of Head of the Department, Dr. Sudhir Tyagi. The students observed various library services and procedures and also showed great interest in seeing the rare literature and manuscripts stored.
During the educational tour, Dr. Ramesh C. Gaur (Dean, Director Library & Information Science) and Head Kalanidhi Division, IGNCA, addressed the students that recognizing the need to collect and preserve the scattered fragments of Indian art and culture, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts has published a book especially for the arts. The Centre’s programs include, in collaboration with UNDP, the use of multimedia computer technology to develop a wide variety of software packages that convey cultural information.
Dr. Gaur said that about three lakh manuscripts are stored in the centre as well as their personal literature has been provided to IGNCA by various scholars. While answering the curiosities and questions of the students, Dr. Gaur provided important information about various opportunities in this profession for the bright future of the students. Ancient manuscripts remained the main centre of attraction for the students.
The visit of the library was led by Library Head Dr. Ranjana Chakraborty. She provided information about the available documents in reference section. Information about preservation section was provided by Dr. Alok Garal and information about reprography section was provided to the students by Dr. Deepraj Gupta. Dr. Jasveer Singh, Assistant Professor, IGNCA also provided full support in this visit.
On this occasion, all of the teachers of the department: Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Dr. Javed Khan, Dr. Sapna Sharma and Dr. Alpana were present. The objective of this visit was to make the students aware of various important rare collections, their preservation techniques and various services so that they can get practical information about the functioning of different types of libraries. The tour was also helpful to know about the operative functioning of each section of library in detail. It was very helpful to develop research ability of the students.
