“Sustainable Development Goal” SDG-5 (Gender Equality)’’

Keral Verma Subharti College of Science, in collaboration with the Gender Sensitization Cell of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, organized a guest lecture focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG-5): Gender Equality. This initiative aimed to raise awareness and foster understanding of gender equality issues among students, faculty, and staff. The event, held on 26th February 2025, was a significant step towards promoting a more inclusive and equitable campus environment.

The program commenced with welcome address  in  which, the importance of SDG-5 and the relevance of addressing gender equality within the academic community, highlighted.

Keral Verma Subharti College of Science is committed to fostering a gender-sensitive environment and  doing continuous efforts to challenge gender stereotypes and promote equal opportunities for all.

The Gender Sensitization Cell is active in promoting gender equality on campus. The cell is dedicated to create a safe and supportive space for all students and staff.

The guest lecture delivered by Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of the Department of Languages. Dr. Sharma provided a comprehensive overview of SDG-5, exploring its various dimensions and its significance in achieving sustainable development. She discussed the challenges and opportunities related to gender equality in contemporary society, drawing upon relevant examples and case studies.

The lecture covered key aspects of SDG-5, including, eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and girls: Addressing the root causes of gender inequality and promoting legal and policy frameworks that protect women’s rights. Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls: Focusing on education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and political participation. Ending all forms of violence against women and girls: Emphasizing the need for prevention, protection, and prosecution of perpetrators. Ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life: Highlighting the importance of women’s representation in leadership roles. Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights: Recognizing the fundamental rights of women to control their own bodies and make informed choices.The engaging presentation sparked a lively discussion, with students and faculty members raising pertinent questions and sharing their perspectives.

The  vote of thanks was delivered, to express gratitude to lecturer for her insightful lecture, as well as to the organizers, participants, and support staff.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students from various Faculties and departments. The presence of a diverse audience underscored the university’s commitment to inclusivity and the widespread interest in gender equality issues.
