The Department of Liberal Arts and Humanities, under the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, organized a Guest Lecture cum Workshop on the topic Intellectual Property Rights: A Catalyst for Viksit Bharat@2047.”

The distinguished guest speaker for the session was Dr. Nisha Rana, Incharge, IPR Cell, Research & Development Cell, SVSU, Meerut.

The program commenced with a warm welcome by the event coordinator Dr. Ruby, who introduced the theme and emphasized the growing importance of Intellectual Property Rights in today’s world of rapid innovation and digital creativity.

Dr. Nisha Rana began by introducing the audience to the concept and importance of Intellectual Property Rights, emphasizing that in today’s knowledge-driven society, the protection of original ideas and innovations is more important than ever. She explained that IPR acts as a legal framework that gives creators the exclusive right to use, commercialize, and protect their inventions and creative works. The importance of recognizing, respecting, and safeguarding such rights forms the foundation of ethical research and innovation.

She went on to define and elaborate on the major components of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, geographical indications, designs, and trade secrets. With the help of case studies and examples from Indian and international contexts, she made these complex legal terminologies accessible and engaging. For instance, she illustrated how a patent protects technological inventions, while copyrights safeguard literary, artistic, and musical creations. She also pointed out the increasing significance of trademarks in branding and business identity, especially in the age of digital marketing and e-commerce.

One of the highlights of her presentation was a section on the role of IPR in academic institutions and research organizations. Dr. Nisha Rana urged students and faculty to be vigilant about their rights and to adopt a proactive approach to protecting their work. She emphasized that innovations emerging from university research—whether a scientific discovery, a social science tool, or a literary creation—must be documented, registered, and protected to prevent misuse or unauthorized commercial use.

Dr. Nisha Rana also explained the procedure for filing patents and copyrights in India, including the timelines, documentation, and cost involved. She encouraged the participants to consult their university’s IPR Cell or seek guidance from the Research & Development Cell for assistance in navigating these processes. The session also touched upon IPR policies under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and a research-oriented mindset among students.

Throughout the presentation, Dr. Nisha Rana maintained an interactive tone, inviting questions and encouraging discussion. Her delivery was supported by visually rich slides, diagrams, and examples that made the content more relatable. The session concluded with a strong message: “Awareness about IPR is the first step toward protecting what we create.”

After that a heartfelt vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Jyoti Gaur, Head of the Department to Dr. Nisha Rana for her valuable presence and enlightening contribution to the discourse. Her insights added depth and relevance to the discussion, enriching the academic environment and leaving a lasting impression on all participants. Her commitment to intellectual growth and awareness was truly appreciated by the faculty, students, and guests present. She expressed her deep appreciation for the intellectual rigor and engaging discussions that characterized the session. Dr. Gaur highlighted the significance of the day’s theme and the importance of promoting awareness about intellectual rights in academic and professional spheres. She emphasized that students, scholars, and educators have a crucial responsibility to not only create but also safeguard their ideas. Raising awareness about intellectual rights, he noted, is the first step toward ensuring a fair and ethical academic culture. She urged everyone to continue exploring this vital area and to stay informed about their rights and responsibilities as knowledge creators.
