Lecture Series on ‘The provisions made in the Indian Budget 2024’

On the 20th of September, a guest lecture was organized by the Swami Vivekananda Research Chair under the Swami Vivekananda Lecture Series on the provisions made in the Indian Budget 2024 for higher education and the goals of Vikshit Bharat 2047, focusing on employment, skill development, and research advancement. The event commenced by offering respects to Swami Vivekanand Ji.

 Dr. Monika Mehrotra , the convener of the Swami Vivekanand Research Chair at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, provided detailed insights into the objectives of the chair, which primarily aim to promote the vision of Swami Vivekanand and the holistic development of humanity.

 Dr. Shalya Raj the CEO , Swami Vivekanand Subharti University  extended his best wishes and emphasized the need for legal reforms to ensure government grants to higher education institutions and urged attention to private institutions.

 Dr. G. K. Thapliyal, Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the integral role of higher education institutions in shaping the nation’s trajectory toward Vikshit Bharat 2047. To realize this vision, he stressed the importance of focusing on private institution development.

Dr. Himanshu Aren, the Pro VC of Subharti University added that the role of higher education institutions in fostering skilled youth is crucial for the nation’s development. Subharti University is dedicated to the upliftment of students in education, service, and culture.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Madan Mohan Goel, former Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University and an eminent economist, emphasized the need to reform our education system by aligning with digital interventions and holistic perspectives. He stressed that higher education institutions play an essential role not only in producing competent professionals but also in fostering inclusive societal welfare.

The second keynote speaker, Dr. D.P. Semwal, former IRS officer and expert in international finance, pointed out the significant financial allocations made in the Budget 2024 for digital infrastructure and research in higher education, noting a 47,619.77 crore INR budget which marked a 7.68% increase from the previous year. He stated that this funding provides opportunities to expand skill development, research initiatives, and employment, helping to fuel the progress toward Vikshit Bharat.

Prof. Goel highlighted that, besides meeting market demands, youth should also engage in the broader welfare of society. The program witnessed the participation of over 200 students, deans, directors, heads, and faculty members.

 The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. A.P. Garg Head Research and Development Cell SVSU, he expressed gratitude for the impactful discussions on reforms to support the higher education system in shaping India’s future trajectory. The event concluded with the national anthem. Ms Devika and Nabhiha of Economics department were master of ceremony.
