“Media Effects on Society: Legacy Media and New Media”

Swami Vivekanand Subharti University Meerut’s Journalism and Mass Communication Department organized an international lecture on “Media Effects on Society: Legacy Media and New Media”. In this lecture, Dr. Anoop Kumar, Professor of Mass Communication Department, Cleveland State University, Ohio, USA, presented his views as the keynote speaker.

In his address, Dr. Anoop Kumar, pointing out the impact of journalism and mass communication on the world level, said that media has a very wide impact on society. He said that during the First World War, American sociologists had first underlined this point. In their research, they found that the media is very useful for disseminating any propaganda on a large scale. Dr. Anoop also said that in the early years of the 20th century, the famous American publisher Edward W. Scripps said that the democratic government is the government of newspapers.

Apart from this, Dr. Kumar said that media not only affects the society but it also plays a vital role in the development of society. At the same time, it also affects every human being individually. Responding to the questions of the students, Prof. Anup Kumar said that Indian journalism is the most diverse journalism in the world because the social structure here is full of diversity. He said that there is a need to remove the negative impact of news and journalists will have to understand the new media well in today’s modern era. Prof. Anup said that in this era of hybrid media, media today has the power to change political and social thinking. He said that today the content related to the common man is almost missing from newspapers, which is a matter of concern. He said that new media has changed the direction and condition of journalism today.

Professor Anup, while satisfying the curiosity of the students, said that there is no threat to the field of journalism and mass communication from “AI”, because no technology can ever end, it is just that its time from our daily time gets divided with the new technology.

On this occasion, while introducing the guest, the head of the journalism department, Prof. (Dr.) Subhash Chandra Thaledi said that in today’s time people consider journalism to be very simple, whereas in reality it is a very challenging task because it requires careful study of various aspects and includes them in the reports.

This program was hosted by Garima Pandey, a student of the journalism department, while its coordination and vote of thanks was done by the assistant professor of the department, Dr. Preeti Singh.
