Rahul Sankrityayan Subharti School of Linguistics & Foreign Languages, Department of Languages, Subharti University, Meerut, organized a Tiranga Rakhi Making Competition on 08 August 2025 as part of the grand Raksha Bandhan celebration. This special initiative was conducted under the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign, commemorating the 79th Independence Day of India. The primary objective of this event was not merely to celebrate a traditional festival, but to instill the deep-rooted values, traditions, and national consciousness associated with Indian culture into the minds of the new generation. For students, this celebration was not just a cultural activity, but a meaningful medium to express creativity, social responsibility, and patriotism.
The program was formally inaugurated by Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of the Department of Languages, with a ceremonial welcome of the Dean, Prof. Sudhir Tyagi. This welcome was more than a formality-it was a living embodiment of the Indian tradition of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (The guest is akin to God). The venue was beautifully decorated with traditional rangoli, floral arrangements, and images of the national flag, creating an atmosphere immersed in festive spirit.
Delivering his inaugural address from the stage, Prof. Sudhir Tyagi enlightened the students about the traditional, social, and national significance of Raksha Bandhan. He remarked-“Rakhi is not just a thread-it is a bond of trust, responsibility, and patriotism. When linked to the service of the nation, this festival speaks directly to our soldiers, society, and soul.”
He reminded students that the dignity of personal relationships becomes meaningful only when it is linked to social concerns and reflects the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). His speech resonated not just with formal address but reflected the love for society and national awareness of an experienced educationist. His words deeply touched the hearts of the students, creating an emotional, motivational, and heartfelt atmosphere in the auditorium. His message compelled everyone to reflect-do we celebrate our festivals merely as rituals, or do we genuinely strive to imbibe their ideals into our lives?
Dedicated to the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (Celebration of India’s Independence), this theme offered students an opportunity to express their thoughts through creative means. Around fifty students from the departments of Languages, Fine Arts, Naturopathy, Mass Communication, etc., participated in the competition. They designed beautiful and meaningful rakhis reflecting patriotism, cultural awareness, and environmental values. Some rakhis were adorned in the colors of the Indian flag; others artistically conveyed messages of soldiers’ emotions, symbols of the freedom struggle, and environmental conservation.Students from the Fine Arts Department designed an attractive rakhi based on the three colors of the national flag, clearly reflecting a sense of national pride.Students from the Department of Languages presented rakhis dedicated to soldiers, symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and devotion to the motherland.Students from the Department of Naturopathy created eco-friendly and reusable rakhis using organic materials, setting a beautiful example of environmental consciousness.
All these creations reflected not just aesthetic sensitivity but a strong sense of social awareness. In the midst of the program, a discussion session was held by faculty members on the relevance and educational significance of the festival. Dr. Rafat Khanam, Language In-charge, addressed the gathering by saying-“Such events not only encourage creativity among students but also cultivate deep sensitivity and responsibility toward Indian languages and culture. Language is not merely a medium of communication; it is a vehicle of values, and this festival has presented that tradition vividly before the students.”
Professor Rajeshwar Pal remarked-“Participation in festivals steers students toward social behavior and responsibility. They don’t just read about society; they become active participants in it.”Following the Rakhi competition, an exhibition of all rakhis was set up, which was widely appreciated by both students and teachers. The exhibition showcased not only creativity but also clarity of message and artistic excellence. The judging panel evaluated the rakhis based on thematic relevance, creativity, social messaging, and originality of presentation. This exhibition became more than an expression of art-it became a powerful platform for ideas, emotions, and national awareness.
At the concluding session, Dr. Seema, Head of the Department, expressed gratitude to all participants and collaborators. She said- “The most beautiful way to keep traditions alive is to share them with the younger generation. This event was a meaningful effort in that direction—a vibrant confluence of emotions, culture, and patriotism.” She further added that this event reinforced the department’s vision, where education is not limited to syllabi but serves as a medium for life values and social consciousness. Thus, this Raksha Bandhan celebration was not just a traditional festival; it evolved into a thought-a profound experience, where the tenderness of personal bonds, responsibility toward society, and dedication to the nation harmoniously merged. The celebration transcended a cultural event, becoming a moral and intellectual awakening, proving that such cultural initiatives are essential for students’ holistic development in university life. This event not only provided a platform for students’ creativity but also ignited their sense of social responsibility and patriotism. It proved to be a strong step toward personality development, where students emerged not just as academically capable individuals, but as sensitive, responsible, and nation-oriented citizens.
This inspirational and dignified event was made successful through the dedicated contribution of numerous teachers and collaborators. Under the leadership of Dr. Seema Sharma, Head of the Department, the event was planned and executed systematically. Prof. Rajeshwar Pal strengthened the program’s intellectual direction with his experience and thoughtful insights.Dr. Rafat Khanam, as Language In-charge, and Dr. Nishi Raghav , Coordinator of the program remained a continuous source of guidance and inspiration.
