Report of Guest Lecture on
“Information Literacy: Uses of Library and Online Resources”
The Department of Library & Information Science, SVSU, Meerut, organized an educational and interactive ‘Guest Lecture’ on April 12, 2024. The guest speaker was Dr. M. P. Singh, Professor, DLIS and Dean, School of Information Science &Technology, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Lucknow. He is an eminent scholar and has vast experience & knowledge in the field of Library & Information Science.
The topic of this lecture was “Information Literacy: Uses of Library and Online Resources”. The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Sudhir Tyagi, Head, Department of Library & Information Science and Dean, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, SVSU. He introduced the guest speaker before starting the lecture. Dr. M. P. Singh discussed the various concepts of Information Literacy and their importance in daily life. He emphasized that information literacy education is meant to help students expand their knowledge through effective use of skills, improve their thinking, and teach them how to find information, preparing them for lifelong learning. He also explained that the aim of Information Literacy includes several aspects such as library literacy, media literacy, computer/IT literacy, or digital literacy. Students must be literate in these fields. Students and teachers can obtain their required information from libraries, media and internet. In 21st-century librarianship, value-added services, usage, and satisfaction of library users are key to any library’s success. To effectively and adequately satisfy users, it is necessary to acquaint them with the library system and its functions. He gave a brief idea about how to access databases and how to find books and journal articles through the OPAC. He motivated the students to improve their Information Literacy skills by using online tools. All BLIS & MLIS students along with the faculty members attended the lecture. After his lecture, the students were given time to interact with him. Students and faculty members felt that the session was informative and interactive.
The lecture concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sapna Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Library & Information Science, SVSU. The program was actively supported by all the faculty members and students of the Department.
